THE BODY CAM IS OUT. THE 6-YEAR-OLD TELLS POLICE HE STOLE THE GUN FROM HIS MOM. *WARNING: EXPLICIT, Contains strong language A judge unsealed nearly three minutes of Officer Brian Torrez's body camera from Richneck Elementary on January 6, 2023. The Virginian-Pilot obtained it. It was the first exhibit at the May trial of former assistant principal Ebony Parker. First-grade teacher Abigail Zwerner had started afternoon reading in Classroom 11. The boy, called J.T. in court, pulled a 9mm from his jacket about 10 feet away and fired once. The bullet went through her hand and into her chest. She got the 16 students out, then collapsed in the office. She survived surgery. Reading specialist Amy Kovac had him in a bear hug when officers came in. His face is blurred. He curses at her and at the officers. On the tape he says, "My mom had that. I stole that from my mom." Kovac told police he had admitted to one bullet. A deputy found the Taurus on the floor, 15 to 20 feet from him. He had residue on his hand. Staff had warned administrators that day about his aggression and that he might have a gun. No one searched him. A jury in November 2025 awarded Zwerner $10 million against Parker, who she said ignored those warnings. She had asked for $40 million. On May 21, 2026, Judge Rebecca Robinson dismissed the criminal case against Parker, saying the evidence was not a crime under Virginia law. His mother, Deja Nicole Taylor, was convicted of felony child neglect and federal gun charges. She was sentenced to 3 years and 9 months. The boy was 6. He is not named here beyond the court initials.
